Easy Homemade Dog Food

A few years ago, I transitioned from feeding my dogs store-bought dog food to food I made at home. I became increasingly alarmed about the quality and health risks of store-bought dog food after reading highly publicized reports of illness, even death, caused by tainted, recalled dog food. Also worrying was my unfamiliarity with many of the ingredients identified on the package. What exactly was I feeding my dog?

As I started experimenting with dog food recipes, I found that I was spending a lot of time slicing and chopping the ingredients.  And while I was determined to prepare homemade food for my dogs, I needed a way to reduce the amount of time it took.

My answer was the Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor.

All the time I spent slicing and chopping using my knife and cutting board, now took seconds with this Cuisinart Food Processor. First, Cuisinart is a name brand I know and trust. It is, as expected, of high quality and performance. It’s an attractive, convenient and space saving countertop appliance. It provides easy accessibility, use and clean-up. All of this comes at an affordable price! What’s not to love?

Here are two of Ben, my Golden Retriever’s favorite recipes made fast and super easy with my Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor. I use the chopping/mixing blade and compact flat cover to process the roast chicken breast, mixed veggies/spinach mixture and cooked lentils used in these recipes.

Roast Chicken with Mixed Veggies

1 5 lb. tray Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Remove any fat from chicken breasts. Place in foil lined baking pans and lightly coat with extra virgin olive oil.

Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes, flip over and bake for another 30 minutes.

Let cool. Coarsely chop in Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor.

Store in food container and refrigerate.

5 lb. Frozen Mixed Veggies (Carrots, Green Beans, Peas and Corn), Thawed

1 lb. Fresh Spinach Leaves

Grind in batches in Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor.

Combine and mix well.

Store in food container and refrigerate.

To serve, combine 1 part chopped Roasted Chicken Breast, 1 part ground Mixed Veggie/Spinach mixture and 1 part Kibble (my choice is Hill’s Science Diet).  Drizzle with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (optional).  Mix well, warm in microwave.

(Note:  For Ben, I use 1 cup of each ingredient.  This amount will vary with the appropriate portion size for your dog; use equal amounts of each ingredient.)

In addition to his meal, I also give Ben a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement to make certain he’s getting his daily requirement.

Hamburger and Lentil Meatball Treats

Combine the following ingredients:

1 lb. Ground Beef

2 cups Mixed Veggie/Spinach mixture (recipe from above)

2 cups cooked Lentils (follow package instructions), grind in Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor.

2 slices Whole Wheat Bread (soak in milk, remove excess milk, hand shred)

2 eggs

Form into tablespoon-sized meatballs. Place on 2 foil lined cookie sheets sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.  Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees F, rotate on baking shelves, cook an additional 15 minutes.

Let cool. Makes approximately 60 meatballs.

Conclusion

Making homemade dog food gives me the assurance of knowing that I am feeding my dog high quality and nutritious meals.

The Cuisinart DLC-8SBCY 11-Cup Food Processor is invaluable for allowing me to do this in just a fraction of the time.  This is just one of the countless ways it will make food preparation faster and easier!
